Nestled in the village of Turckheim in Alsace, BRAND is an exceptional terroir for several reasons. It is surrounded by legends and its granitic soil has all the qualities required for the vines to thrive and offer grapes that will produce wines of exceptional qualities. The ancestral know how of the estate transforms this natural heritage into a cuvée named Sang du Dragon (Dragon’s blood).
Legend tells us that once upon a time a lost dragon settled on top of the Brand hill but suffered burns from the sun. After a relentless fight against the day star, the fabulous animal went to hide into a cave called Drachenloch, where it got trapped and died from its wounds with its blood fertilizing the earth.
Since then, the vineyards have been thriving there.
BRAND is the german word for FIRE. This south to south-east exposed vineyard is protected from the cold winds by the surrounding hills and benefits from perfect climatic conditions with maximum sunshine and ideal rainfall.
White wines from BRAND are amongst the fifty one classified Grand Cru of the Alsace wine region.
Here, in the early seventies, François BAUR planted Pinot Noir: Sang du Dragon became the flagship wine of the family estate.
Our vineyards grow on soils cultivated biodynamically.
Pinot Noir from the steep slopes of BRAND is low yielding, which makes it rare, but it is also planted in high density. Its roots search deep for the essence of the terroir and the grapes are flavourful.
Those grapes are pressed slowly, obeying strict rules, to preserve their authenticity.
This outstanding cuvée is vinified in oak barriques for 18 to 24 months before being bottled without filtration.
This results in a rich and concentrated premium red wine of garnet colour.
The red fruit aromas of this great wine match perfectly with red meat, game and cheeses.
The Alsace Grand Cru appellation does not apply to Sang du Dragon, but the name is a trade mark.
